Which Comes First: Logo or Website?

Your logo and website are two important pieces of your organization's brand. Deciding which to prioritize is difficult, especially if you're on a budget.

The struggle tends to go like this: on one hand, you need a website because it's the first place you want to tell your audience to go.

On the other hand, your logo is part of who you are as an organization--a visual cue which helps your audience identify your brand.

But which do you design first?

Design your logo first.

If your organization were a person, think of your logo as that person's name. A logo is the simplest way your audience will recognize who you are.

It'll also set the theme for your brand. Your logo will determine the kinds of typefaces that you'll use on your website. It'll set your website's color palette, icon set, padding, and overall design.

Your logo will be designed into every aspect of your organization - website, ads, letterhead, business cards, and any other collateral.

Design the logo first, and let the website follow closely after. Your web designer will thank you for not having to use placeholders everywhere.

After you have a logo, then tackle the website.

Website design is more intuitive after you've designed your logo. Your website designer will definitely want to start building your website by getting a feel for your branding before s/he starts coding.

Your business is your ship to steer, not your designer's. Unless s/he is designing your logo too, s/he can't read your brand's mind.

Your logo is one part of your brand, while your website is an extension of your brand.

Keep in mind that the first and most important job you have as an entrepreneur is to build the trust of your audience. You're more likely to build that trust if you have a strong brand identity, because your audience will better understand what kind of organization you're building.

This is where your logo and brand come in.

Start with a strong logo and solid branding, then develop an intuitive, beautifully designed website to complement it. By doing so, you'll set yourself up for success.
